What Does Gifted Testing Measure?
Parent consultation provides educational information and guidance and does not constitute a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation, diagnosis, legal advice, or a guarantee of eligibility for school services.
Assessments Used
WISC-V | Ages 6–16
Typically takes about 60 minutes and evaluates areas such as verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed.
RIAS-2 | Ages 3 through Adult
Typically takes about 35–50 minutes and provides an efficient assessment of verbal and nonverbal reasoning abilities.
Testing requirements and accepted assessments may vary by Florida school district or gifted program. Parents should confirm current requirements with their child’s school or district.

Before Your Session: What You’ll Need
A few simple things will help your child’s virtual testing session go smoothly.
Computer or Laptop
Your child will need access to a desktop or laptop computer for testing. Smartphones should not be used.
Camera & Microphone
Make sure the computer has a working camera and microphone so your child and the School Psychologist can see and hear each other clearly. Headphones may also be helpful.
Reliable Internet
A strong, stable internet connection will help prevent interruptions during the evaluation.
Required Technology
Before your appointment, make sure any required browser, testing platform, or software is installed and ready to use. You will receive instructions before your session.
Quiet Testing Space
Choose a quiet, private, distraction-free area where your child can focus and complete testing comfortably.
Allow Enough Time
Please plan for the full testing session and have your child log in a few minutes early so there is time to get settled and begin on schedule.
What to Expect

Choose an available appointment time that works for your family. You’ll provide some basic information about your child and complete any required forms before testing.
Testing Day
Your child will complete a series of questions, puzzles, patterns, and thinking activities designed to measure reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Testing typically takes about 40–75 minutes, depending on the assessment and your child’s pace. No studying is needed.
Results & Next Steps
After testing, your child’s results will be scored and reviewed. We’ll explain what the scores mean, answer your questions, and provide the documentation needed to help you understand your child’s results and next steps for gifted consideration.

How Gifted Eligibility Works in Florida
Florida's Gifted/AGP program typically requires children to meet three criteria:
IQ score of 130 or higher on a state-approved test (Lower scores might be considered in certain situations, such as an ESOL/ELL history or family income circumstances.)
Teacher ratings
showing traits associated with giftedness—curiosity, creativity, leadership, and academic achievement
Strong grades or standardized test scores
Eligibility decisions are made by a team that includes parents, teachers, a district psychologist, and other district staff. My role is to provide a valid, professionally administered IQ assessment that meets Florida requirements.

State-approved assessments for Gifted/AGP eligibility, using current test editions accepted by all local school districts.

Helping Your Child Get Ready for Gifted Testing

Avoid putting pressure on your child to achieve a particular score. Instead, explain that they will be completing different activities that give them an opportunity to show how they think and solve problems.
For younger children, you might simply describe the appointment as doing puzzles, answering questions, and completing different thinking activities.

Remind your child to listen carefully to directions and think before responding. If answer choices are provided, encourage them to consider all of the choices before making a decision.
Children should understand that some questions may become difficult—and that is completely normal.

A good night’s sleep, a normal meal, comfortable clothing, and an unhurried start can make a difference. Try to avoid creating unnecessary pressure by repeatedly discussing scores, gifted eligibility, or how important the test is.
